Heart Banner
Many people live with heart problems for years without realizing they can be treated. Some treatment options we offer can cure certain types of heart conditions.

Expert Heart Care at Seton Medical Center

At Seton Medical Center, we are proud to be cardiovascular pioneers. We are the birthplace of interventional cardiology, a minimally invasive approach to treating heart conditions. Our specialization is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart and the vascular systems (arteries and veins).

We are a referral center in the Bay Area for our expertise in the treatment of STEMI (segment elevation myocardial infarction) heart attacks, which are one of the most serious types of heart attacks. This means doctors send their most critical heart patients to us.

We have a proud history of developing and incorporating groundbreaking heart technologies.

Here are just some of the ways Seton has led the way in cardiovascular care.

  • We are the first center in the world to perform balloon angioplasty in multiple coronary arteries (to widen narrowed or blocked arteries).
  • We are the first in the Bay Area to use the rotablator technology (high-speed device for crushing calcified plaque deposits in coronary arteries).
  • We are the first heart center in the nation to use laser technology to treat disease in the peripheral and coronary arteries.
  • We are the first in the Bay Area to use cardiopulmonary support during complex coronary angioplasty procedures (to treat left main coronary artery disease).
  • We are the first hospital worldwide to use current laser technology to revive transmyocardial revascularization (for restoring blood circulation to parts of the heart that can’t be treated with conventional surgery).
  • We are the first in the Bay Area to use radiation angioplasty, or brachytherapy (to slow cell growth in the artery).

STEMI heart attacks

A STEMI heart attack is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. It occurs when the blood supply to the heart is cut off because of a blockage.

Our ability to quickly and efficiently treat STEMI heart attacks lies in the expertise of our care team. We diagnose STEMI heart attacks via EKG, which requires specialized training and experience.

Treatments for STEMI heart attacks can include surgical options, such as angioplasty and stenting, or nonsurgical options, including medication.

Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common condition that occurs when the upper chambers of the heart are out of sync with the lower chambers. AFib is a type of irregular heartbeat also known as an arrhythmia.

Some signs of atrial fibrillation include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Weakness

AFib can come and go, and is usually not a medical emergency. However, if left untreated, AFib can lead to more serious conditions, such as heart attack and stroke.

The most common way to diagnose atrial fibrillation is with an electrocardiogram (EKG).

Treatment options for AFib depend on the severity of the condition and can include:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Electroshock therapy
  • Medication

Heart failure

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is not able to effectively and efficiently pump blood.

Among the many different causes of heart failure, some of the most common include:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • High blood pressure
  • A family history of heart disease

Treatment options for heart failure differ from patient to patient. Your doctor will first diagnose the cause of your heart failure and then recommend a treatment program tailored to your needs.

Some possible treatment options for heart failure include:

  • Nonsurgical options such as rehab and diet modification
  • Prescription medications such as channel blockers and enzyme inhibitors
  • Surgical procedure such as angioplasty or coronary bypass

Expert Diagnosis of Heart Conditions and Cardiovascular Disease

At Seton Medical Center, we offer complete and comprehensive diagnosis of heart conditions and vascular disease. We are known for our progressive and advanced diagnostic techniques and technologies.

At our center, you will find:

  • Accurate, fast diagnosis
  • Expertise and commitment to preventive care, resulting in only a fraction of our patients requiring surgery (10 to 15 percent)
  • 3 catheterization labs that are among the best in the Bay Area
  • Advanced diagnostic procedures in our electrophysiology, vascular and endovascular lab

Catheterization Lab for Heart Disease Diagnosis and Imaging

A catheterization lab (cath lab) is a specialized exam room that uses diagnostic and imaging technologies to see the inner working of the heart.

This can include:

  • Arterial blockage
  • Chambers of the heart
  • Blood flow

Cardiac catheterization helps your doctor understand how well your heart works and if there are any problems or blockages. At Seton, we have 3 catheterization labs located on the ground floor.

Some of the testing offered in our cath labs includes:

  • Angiography: A specialized X-ray that detects blockages in the arteries and veins
  • Electrophysiology studies: Procedures that test the electrical activities of the heart and can help identify patients that are at potential risk of sudden death
  • Echocardiography: A noninvasive test that uses sound waves to show the size and shape of the heart, how well the chambers and valves are working and how well blood is flowing to those areas
  • Mapping: Technology that evaluates and detects blood clots in the arteries and veins

Advanced Diagnosis of Heart Conditions at Seton

We are constantly working to incorporate the latest diagnostic technologies. As a result, we can offer patients the most skilled and advanced diagnosis of heart conditions in the Bay Area. This includes everything from mapping and ablation technologies to diagnosis of abnormal electrical activities in the heart.

In addition to our 3 catheterization labs, we offer advanced diagnosis in our electrophysiology, vascular and endovascular laboratory:

  • Fractional flow reserve: An advanced technique that can determine the maximum recommended blood flow through a diseased artery
  • Optical coherence tomography: A technique that uses infrared light to evaluate coronary artery disease

At Seton, we specialize in heart device implantation. Implantation devices can offer a better quality of life for heart patients suffering from a number of heart conditions, including heart failure and arrhythmia.

Implantation devices we offer include:

  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD): Delivers therapeutic electric currents to correct heart arrhythmias

  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) device: Detects and corrects irregular heartbeats

Catheter Ablation at Seton: A Cure for Heart Disease

Catheter ablation is one of the strengths of our cardiovascular treatment program at Seton. It is a unique part of electrophysiology that can treat heart arrhythmias.

Catheter ablation:

  • Uses radiofrequency waves to destroy damaged cardiac tissue
  • Is a specialized treatment that can provide a cure, not just a treatment, for certain heart patients
  • Offers patients a return to a normal quality of life

Many patients come to us for a specialized type of ablation technique called epicardial catheter ablation. This is an ablation treatment that concentrates on the outside of the heart muscle. We are one of the only hospitals in the area to offer this type of treatment.

Advanced Heart Treatment at Seton

The specialty training and expertise of our team of cardiac physiologists means we can offer our patients many advanced treatment options. We will work with you to tailor treatment to your needs.

Here are just some of the specialty techniques we offer at Seton:

  • Transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMLR): This treatment provides pain relief to heart patients who are not good candidates for more traditional surgical methods. This procedure uses a laser to make small channels in the left ventricle of the heart, creating new pathways that bring more blood to the heart and improve heart health.
  • Interventional cardiac oncology: This specialized treatment relies on the expertise and collaboration of cardiologists and oncologists (cancer specialists). If you are a cancer patient with a known heart condition, traditional cancer treatments can be stressful to your heart. Our interventional cardiac oncology team creates specialized treatment programs tailored to your unique needs.
  • Heart surgery: At Seton, we first try to treat our patients using nonsurgical methods. But sometimes a surgical procedure offers you the best outcome. Our skilled team of heart surgeons is highly trained and can offer many surgical options for those patients that do require surgery. Some of the surgeries we offer include:
    • Heart bypass surgeries
    • Open heart surgery
    • Heart valve surgeries
    • Vascular reconstruction
  • Infusion: We provide infusion therapies such as inotropic infusion for patients with congestive heart failure. Our nurses are specially trained to provide skilled infusion treatment while creating a comfortable environment for patients.
