Family Medicine Residency Program
Building a team of highly-skilled experts
We recruit candidates from medical schools across the country, training them to become skilled, caring physicians.
The San Jose-O’Connor Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program trains residents to become community physicians skilled at caring for patients of all ages—from newborns to the elderly. Residents learn to deliver babies, assist surgeons and care for patients admitted to the hospital.
Our Family Medicine Residency Program is an “8-8-8” residency program, meaning it includes 8 residents in each of their three years of training – one year of internship followed by two additional years of residency. This program comes after a minimum of four years of medical school. We recruit residents from a pool of several hundred qualified applicants from medical schools all over the United States.
Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
Our Sports Medicine Fellowship Program offers a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine to two candidates per year. One candidate is a graduate from a Primary Care Residency Program, and one is from an Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
The fellows, as part of their training, perform the following duties at the Sports Medicine Clinics:
- Supervise and teach residents
- Prepare and present lectures to residents during noontime conferences
Family Medicine Residency Training Team
Director Grace Yu, MD, a graduate of the program, leads the Family Medicine Residency Program. The Family Medicine Associates of San Jose (FMASJ) faculty, also known as “physician-educators,” consists of 13 board-certified family physicians, and one licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). These faculty physicians have trained more than 200 local family physicians – perhaps even your own family doctor.
Their expertise covers a wide range of areas:
- Addiction medicine
- Adolescent medicine
- Behavioral science
- Geriatric medicine
- Gynecology
- Headache management
- Infectious disease
- Informatics (computer and PDA use of technology in medicine)
- Mood disorders (anxiety and depression)
